Electric Toothbrushes – 10 Key Features
Electric toothbrushes can be most easily divided into rotating (e.g., OralB) and sonic/vibrating toothbrushes (e.g., Philips Sonicare, Trisa). Both types of toothbrushes are very effective and easier to handle compared to traditional toothbrushes. But which one is better for you?
Ideally, you should try them out. Personally, I have a traditional rotating toothbrush and a sonic toothbrush at home. Depending on my mood or the battery status, I use the rotating, the sonic toothbrush, or even a manual toothbrush. Comparing Sonicare and OralB, I personally prefer Sonicare, but that's a subjective opinion. However, one advantage of OralB is its smaller, round brush head, which makes it easier to clean the last tooth. If you’re considering a purchase, keep an eye on three features that are very convenient for daily use.
Speed Adjustment
Some models allow adjustment of the brush speed, which is useful for people with sensitive gums or specific health needs.
Timer
Most electric toothbrushes have a built-in timer that helps ensure the recommended brushing time of 2 minutes is followed.
Pressure Sensor
Some models have pressure sensors that alert the user when too much pressure is applied to the teeth or gums, helping to prevent damage.
Replaceable Brush Heads
Allow for the toothbrush to be adapted to individual needs, such as brush heads for hard-to-reach areas or for gum care. It’s worth checking the prices of the brush heads before purchasing a specific toothbrush.
Availability of Different Cleaning Modes
Toothbrushes may offer various cleaning modes, such as a mode for sensitive teeth, a whitening mode, or an intensive cleaning mode.
Ease of Use
For many people, electric toothbrushes are easier to use, especially for children, older adults, or those with limited manual dexterity.
Long-Lasting Battery
Many models of electric toothbrushes have batteries that last for several days or even weeks on a single charge, which is convenient for travel.
Wear Indicator
Some electric toothbrushes have brush heads with an indicator that changes color to show when the brush head needs to be replaced.
Availability of Mobile Apps
Some modern electric toothbrushes can connect to an app on your smartphone, offering personalized brushing tips, monitoring oral hygiene progress, and providing customized brushing programs.
Which One Should You Choose, Given the Wide Range of Models at Different Prices on the Market?
The prices of electric toothbrushes range from 30 to 250 CHF. It all depends on what you expect from your electric toothbrush. Personally, I believe it's worth aiming for the middle of the mentioned price range. I do not recommend choosing the cheapest models. For sonic toothbrushes, you should pay attention to speed, vibration frequency per minute, and three practical features such as a timer, speed control, and a pressure sensor. If a travel case, connecting the toothbrush to your phone via an app, or a nice design is important to you, you may need to spend a bit more.
